Riverdance legend Michael Flatley has undergone an operation for an aggressive form of cancer which he was unfortunately diagnosed with during the Christmas period.

It is uncertain if the diagnosis is related in any way to previous treatment he received back in 2003 for skin cancer. This was only noticed at the time after an MTV viewer reached out and saw the early signs of a malignant melanoma.

In a post on his official Instagram profile, a spokesperson for Michael published a message saying;

Michael Flatley has been diagnosed with an advanced form of cancer. He has undergone surgery and is in the care of an excellent team of doctors. No further comments will be made at this time. We ask only for your prayers and well wishes.

It is believed he is now recuperating after the operation with the support of his wife, Niamh O’Brien, and son, Michael Junior.

If you are unaware of Michael Flatley, the star first shot to fame after receiving one of the longest applause and standing ovations for the Irish dancing production Riverdance during the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest interval. As a result of the showcase, Riverdance later went on to be produced as a full-length show which was followed up with Flatley's Lord Of The Dance. Since his original diagnosis, the 64-year-old star has been a big supporter of various Cancer charities and only last year, he launched a Lord Of The Dance tour to raise money for the humanitarian effort in Ukraine. We join the many fans around the world in wishing Michael a speedy recovery.
